Hemma creates fresh, elegant collections using authentic hand-woven Kente, a textile rich in African royal tradition. Kente began to flourish in West Africa in the 17th century and still remains prominent representing social prestige, luxury, and cultural sophistication. Each garment is uniquely handmade from intricately hand-woven Kente imported from Ghana. By incorporating the same techniques used to dress Ghanaian nobility for centuries, Hemma allows each client to exude royalty. By investing in quality pieces that last a lifetime, the lives of Ghanaian school children are also impacted. A percentage of all proceeds will be donated to a West African middle school where the designers instructed classes.

Fedoras... Hemma's Next Accessory?

Originally made for women in the late 1880s fedoras have made a complete 360 in fashion & now they are back again! A little history on them though, in the movie Fedora, the main actress wore a hat similar to what we today call fedoras. Women started wearing them all along East & Middle America. Men wore them mostly because it was an easy way to fight the cold, wind, and rain, and the the tip could be turned up when not in use. They were soon tossed in the fashion trash can when cars became smaller and had no room for these hats. Now we use them as a simple- yet stylish year-round accessory that can put a cool and sexy twist to any outfit. I do believe that we'll be seeing a lot more of these cute little hats in both men and women's fashion for a while. I bet you're wondering if Hemma has a line of fedoras, because you are so interested in having a fedora of your own or enhancing your current collection. Not to worry! Stay posted for our fedoras, they will be coming soon. What do you think of fedoras? Cute, quick piece or something that needs to be left in the past?

Oxfords

When it comes to comfy shoes whats the first thing that comes to mind, sneakers, sandals, ballet flats? Lately the shoe that comes to my mind is the oxford, although I must admit, at first I was rather intimidated by the traditionally mens shoe. For the longest time the oxford has been a classic staple in mens wear but is now no longer just for men, women are embracing this shoe as well. Pairing them with everything from dresses to jeans they always seem to look good and add a classic feel to any outfit.

Many styles of this shoe are now available if you want to opt for a less boyish traditional feel, from cutouts, bright colors, sequins, floral and even, animal print. One of the wildest pairs so far has to be the Christian Louboutin Freddy Flats, patent leather with spikes; these shoes will definitely get heads to turn. What do you think of oxfords? Do you love them, or would you rather stick to the simple ballet flat? of oxfords? Do you love them, or would you rather stick to the simple ballet flat?

True Star

Check out a new post done by TrueStar in Chicago. Hemma is getting to be known around the globe and it's a beautiful thing to be able to spread awareness and culture around the globe. This is a youth oriented organization with eight programs that employ 150 student apprentices and seven adult instructors who collectively produce a 44-page quarterly publication as well as teen events. True Star was born from a needs assessment completed by urban youth in Chicago. The results overwhelmingly indicated youth needed employment, basic literary skills, professional development, and wanted to be heard by their peers and the community at large. We here at Hemma love TrueStar for their committment to the youth as we strive to also improve opportunities for the youth in Ghana through The Hemma Foundation. Be sure to check out this wonderful org!

The Museum at FIT's Exhibition Japan Fashion Now

The first of its kind--the Japan Fashion NOW exhibition--opening in September 2010, and running through January 2011 at the Museum at FIT, explores the evolution of Japanese culture through dress and adornment over the past few years. Examples of this include the avant-garde looks of the eighties, as well as the child-esque styles that were introduced much later. Check out the Hemma empire skirt that pays homage to traditional African fashion.

Hemma's Must Reads

Hemma recently turned 2 this month and it made me reflect on how much the company evolved since the initial brainstorm meetings at Think Coffee right after graduation. We evolved tremendously learning a great deal about the industry, business, and ultimately life. Recently, we have been talking more about the separation that must exist between business and personal life. Not allowing set-backs in business to permeate into our everyday life along with not allowing it to have a negative effect on future business matters.

On a continual quest to learn more, I picked up “Nice Girls Don’t Get the Corner Office – 101 Unconscious Mistakes Women Make that Sabotage Their Careers” by Lois P. Frankel. Frankel is the president of a successful consulting firm specializing in executive coaching and leadership development. Although some references were outdated and tailored towards women on Wall Street, I found this book extremely eye-opening. Here are two mistakes from “Nice Girls Don’t Get the Corner Office” that I am working on -

1. Making Miracles – “Women take pride in the fact that they can do more with less, meet or beat impossible deadlines…you must be realistic about establishing work habits and not thinking you have to be a superwoman to be effective.” Tips: Set realistic daily or weekly goals, ask for help, & manage people’s expectations.

2. Ignoring the Importance of Networking Relationships – “We all need to call on relationships every now and then to help us out professionally. And remember: When you need that relationship, it’s already too late to build it.” Tips: Join and actively participate in groups that involve your profession, tell yourself spending time building relationships is not a waste of time, & keep a database that includes the people you meet and information they shared with you.

The other 99 mistakes outlined by Frankel include habits that one may not immediately deem detrimental as polling before making decisions. I appreciated Frankel’s attempt to touch on societal roles that influence the behavior and treatment of women in the workforce. Pick it up to find out more.
